I start by adjusting the color in LAB mode to make it pop ... Image > mode > Lab color ... Image > Apply image ... then I toggle between (channel) lab, a & b (blending mode = soft light) to determine which looks best, sometimes changing opacity to get the color that pops without over-saturating. Then I change back to RGB, usually duplicate layer, desaturate, change blend mode and opacity to get the effect I'm after.
