Fox pupPosted by Ron (Saint Louis, United States) on 29 June 2008 in Animal & Insect and Portfolio. I ran across a female fox and her two pups while out shooting Saturday (28 June) morning. The mother crossed the trail and disappeared (no doubt so she could keep a close eye on me and my movements) while the two pups waited. They did allow me to get fairly close. I'll post a couple more from this little encounter. I was amazed to encounter these foxes on the grounds of the Missouri Botanical Gardens ... smack dab in the middle of a sprawling metropolitan area. But, as Monte Stevens reminded me once, "they were here first."

You really captured them well - the colors are just great.... 29 Jun 2008 11:52am Observing from Local, United KingdomBeautiful shot Ron, well caught. I think foxes are delightful animals. Two nights ago I looked out of the bedroom window and saw a fox just outside in the street, they can really move when they run, keeping their head and tail in one horizontal line. 29 Jun 2008 3:09pm yiannis krikis from thessaloniki, Greecea very beautiful fox portrait - great framing and colors 29 Jun 2008 5:31pm Ronnie 2¢ from London, United KingdomThis is a charming little study and, although I get them loping around London tipping over rubbish bins, it is always at night. Great to see the detail here. 29 Jun 2008 5:47pm Sammi from New Jersey, United StatesLooks like your average dog or something... I don't know. Its a cute little thing. Surprised it didn't notice you. 29 Jun 2008 6:43pm Marcie from United StatesWOW! She's beautiful. There's a wonderful drama unfolding in the picture and I can't wait to see your other shots. Just curious ... at 200mm, how far away were you? I suck at math by the way. And how many shots did you take altogether? 30 Jun 2008 3:30am @Disoriented: It really was a rather incredible encounter for me. I was the first person through the gates at 7 a.m., and on my way to shoot the sacred lotus in the Japanese Garden. I rounded a bend and there they were up on a little ridge ... all three of them. I walked on past them, maybe 30 yards, and sat my bag and tripod on a bench. When I turned back around and slowly started toward them the mother ran across the trail and into another wooded area (I read online that this may have been a diversionary tactic on her part to lure me away from the pups). The pups stayed right where she had left them. They were definitely a bit uneasy with my presence ... moving about a bit, but staying generally in the area in which she left them. Actually, they could have easily taken cover in the low-lying plants, but I also read that they're not too easily spooked by humans. I shot a few shots and realized that my shutter speed was too slow ... I adjusted my ISO and took some more before slowly moving in until I was maybe 15 yards from the pups. I took 18 shots (some of which were blurred because of their movements ... you can see that I wasn't shooting fast enough 1/20th second, 1/25 second). At the point when I was closest, the mother reappeared and gave the pups a signal of some sort and they disappeared into the area behind them. As it turned out, it was too windy to get many good pictures of the lotus. After an hour or so I was on my way back out the way I had come in when I stopped to take some shots of an interesting bush. Suddenly I was greeted by some acquaintances I'd met while shooting at the Botanical Garden. I regaled them with my fantastic tale, and as we stood there one (I think the mother) of the foxes reappeared nearby. They were astonished (as was I) and I was able to snap off another 9 pics. Two years ago while walking around the lake in the Japanese Garden, I looked up a little ridge and there was lying a fox ... pretty as you please under the morning shade of a tree. I didn't approach (wasn't a photog at the time), and it was gone by my next lap around the lake. So ... I was aware that at least some time ago there was a fox on the grounds of the Garden. But this weekend's encounter was really quite a thrill ... made my weekend! GJC from Kyoto, JapanWhat a wonderful surprise, and the resulting photo is very nice. The greens and the crop all make this special. 30 Jun 2008 4:40am Daryl from Amagasaki, JapanYou managed to get a very good composition considering how jittery they are! 30 Jun 2008 3:25pm Melissa W. from Warsaw, Indiana, United StatesFantastic image, Ron. Love the color and contrast. Beautifully framed. Brilliant job! 30 Jun 2008 4:22pm Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United StatesRon - I actually prefer this image to the one you posted Monday. It seems more candid as the pup is not engaged with your presence - and I love the composition. The shadow area just beyond this fox provides a lovely counterpoint of interest. This is a really god capture. 30 Jun 2008 4:42pm Andrew Gould from Sydney, AustraliaWonderful shot. Love the pose you've caught and the composition. 2 Jul 2008 1:43am Jonathan Alan Photography from St. Louis, United Statesi love how the pup is so soft looking 2 Jul 2008 6:45pm Anita from West Nottingham, United StatesGood shot! What fun. I'm amazed that the pups just sat there posing for you. 7 Jul 2008 12:30am |
