Skyward view ...Posted by Ron (Saint Louis, United States) on 8 April 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. Looking straight up the south leg of the Gateway Arch. The Arch was designed to sway as much as 18 inches (45 cm), and can withstand an earthquake; however under normal conditions the Arch does not sway. It takes a 50-mile an hour (80 Km/hour) wind to move the top 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) each side of center.

Marion from Nanaimo, BC, CanadaBeautiful angle Ron. Always such crisp images and the blue sky is just wonderful. 8 Apr 2008 5:20am Angshuman from New Delhi, IndiaQuite an unique way to show the arch Ron. Like the idea of the spine right on the thirds. Alternate POV could have been from the corner of the frame...dunno whether can be done though. Good work! 8 Apr 2008 5:24am Michael Skorulski from Cigel, SlovakiaBeautiful and unusual, Ron. The angle adds drama and interest. 8 Apr 2008 6:33am Disoriented from Washington, DC, United StatesNicely done! I like how you use the reflections of sky in your composition. 8 Apr 2008 7:00am Krisu from Tampere, FinlandAs already said, the angle makes the "thing" to this shot. Just perfect. (Thanking you also changing inch to cm in your very good info!) 8 Apr 2008 7:22am MaryB from Staffordshire, United KingdomWow! the angle and reflections of the sky are fantastic. A really super image Ron. 8 Apr 2008 9:47am @MaryB: Thanks, MaryB. I was lying on my back at the base and shooting with the camera rested against the corner. I'm really pleased with how this one turned out. Yesterday's shot, while it was lighted with that fabulous first light of day, looked like it had been sharpened too much (which I didn't even sharpen it at all). I think the shape of the Arch when compressed down to a smaller size (and lower resolution) causes a bit of jaggies ... but that's not a problem in this image. Betty from New Jersey, United StatesBeautiful! I agree, the angle is wonderful and makes this shot! Excellent. 8 Apr 2008 9:57am Laurent from Lyon, FranceSame subject, but totally different shot. I like the abstract style. 8 Apr 2008 11:18am Lorraine from Gatineau, CanadaWow very imposing and majestic, terrific angle Ron :) 8 Apr 2008 11:46am Melissa W. from Warsaw, Indiana, United StatesWonderful angle...beautiful sky...gorgeous light. Great job! Is the public still allowed to go inside to see the view from the top? 8 Apr 2008 11:59am @Melissa W.: More than 1 million people each year ride to the top ... it's been a number of years since I last rode to the top ... those tight, little tram cars don't fit my 6'4" frame too terribly well. alun lambert from cheshire, United KingdomWhat a great abstract image..well done 8 Apr 2008 12:05pm GJC from Kyoto, JapanI really like this, and how different from yesterday! Clearly the arch is one of your Muses, and speaks to you. I especially like how the arch, through the reflections you've captured, melts into the sky all along the spine. Very lovely. With these and your night shots, you are really on a roll! 8 Apr 2008 1:19pm Chris from South Jersey, United StatesA wonderful shot - the reflections and colors are just great. A wonderful "new" view of a often photographed monument. Well done! 8 Apr 2008 2:01pm Jrask from Pasadena, United StatesGreat choice of perspective Ron! I can't say I've ever seen the arch done like this before. 8 Apr 2008 2:36pm Garibaldi from Sala al Barro, ItalyWonderful angle and reflections. Geometry at its best! Excellent capture Ron! 8 Apr 2008 3:40pm Tracey from Baltimore, United StatesI love the texture of the arch and the reflection of the sky. It's nice to look up! 8 Apr 2008 3:43pm Graham Russon from Cape Town, South AfricaAn awe-inspiring shot, you'r shots have piqued my intrest in something I knew very little about. Thanks for sharing. 8 Apr 2008 3:57pm Wysterior from Kloten, SwitzerlandGorgeous photo with stunning reflections in it - marvellous taken. 8 Apr 2008 6:05pm danthro from Suburbia, United Stateswow. awesome shot. great point of view, composition framing. i like the reflection and sky too. well done! 8 Apr 2008 7:11pm Anita from West Nottingham, United StatesWow! This is fantastic! Fabulous point of view. Lots of eye tricks in this photo, which are fun to sort out--what am I seeing, from what angle, is that a cloud in the sky or a reflection? What fun! ( 8 Apr 2008 8:14pm Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomI like the way it kind of merges its space with the sky above. You chose a good angle here. 8 Apr 2008 11:23pm greg from Denver, United StatesI feel I'm being redundant here.. but shit Ron, that's just freakin' great... 9 Apr 2008 1:13am Michael Rawluk from Prince George, CanadaThat is so good. I have never see it shot like that. Original and excellent composition. 9 Apr 2008 1:40am Daina from United StatesYes, a wonderful shot of the arch. I must admit that I prefer your photo to the real thing. This is probably not a politically correct thing to say but I did see this arch in person years ago and did not care for it that much. 9 Apr 2008 2:35am amy from Rocky Mountain House, CanadaIncredible angle, Ron!! It's a fantastic image... hands down FANtastic! The reflections of the sky in the arch are amazing. 9 Apr 2008 3:16am dobbino from Cape Town, South AfricaSuperb! Would now like to see this in real life. 9 Apr 2008 12:10pm Bonj from Jefferson City, United StatesJust by looking at your pic, one can almost feel themself leaning back and looking up.
